A cross section of Igbo Leaders has made a strong case for immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Leader of Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) by President Bola Tinubu
The Leaders who spoke at the 25th Anniversary of World Igbo Day held at Ekwueme Square,Awka, reiterated the call for his release having been detained unjustly by federal authorities.
In his speech, the Ànambra State Governor, Prof Charles Soludo, recalled that shortly after assuming office, he visited Mazi Kanu in detention and wrote to former President Buhari appealing for his release.
Underscoring the need for sustained effort for his release, he called on Ndigbo to proffer solution to self inflicted harm being perpetuated by hoodlums who had hijacked the struggle by resorting to violent criminal activities.
Governor Soludo who described the theme of this year’s event “Onye Aghana Nwanneya” as apt, emphasized that Igbo remained majoy stakeholders in the nation and beyond, owing to their hard work, enterprising spirit and contributions.
In a goodwill message, Senator Ned Nwoko, represented by Chief Ogbuefi Godfrey Odogwu, commended the resilience of Igbo people particularly their achievements in trade and commerce.
He also called for peace, unity, and support for the creation of Anioma State.
Other leaders and stakeholders including Okey Nwadinobi, Ohaneze Ndigbo Deputy National President, Engr Emeka Sibeudu, Secretary General, Damian Okeke Ogene, re echoed appeal for immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu.
They also called for peace, unity of purpose, love and progress of Igbo nation, while urging Ndigbo to safeguard their cultural heritage.
The event featured cultural dance, masquerade displays and the conferment of the Chieftaincy title, “Okunyeluife” on Governor Soludo by Ohaneze Ndigbo in recognition of his contributions to the Igbo nation.
