2027 EQUITY DEMANDS JUSTICE NNEWI SOUTH’S TURN CANNOT BE DENIED

Why Nnewi South Should Produce the Next House of Representatives Member in 2027

By Augustine Chikeluo

As political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum in Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, the issue of fairness and zoning has once again come to the fore.

Stakeholders and concerned constituents are increasingly aligning around a simple principle: equity must prevail.

Over the years, representation within the constituency has rotated, though not evenly. Nnewi North Local Government Area has held the House of Representatives seat for three consecutive terms, establishing a clear pattern of dominance.

Ekwusigo Local Government Area has also had its fair share of representation. At present, Ekwusigo is further politically advantaged, as its indigene occupies the seat currently in the National Assembly.

In contrast, Nnewi South Local Government Area stands out as the only major bloc in the constituency that has not fully benefited from this rotation in recent times given its population.

This imbalance has raised concerns among political observers and constituents who argue that allowing any other zone, particularly Ekwusigo, which already holds a higher legislative position, to produce the next House of Representatives member would undermine the principles of fairness and inclusion.

Demographically, the case for Nnewi South is equally compelling. With an estimated population of about 388,000 people, Nnewi South is the largest local government area in the constituency. Ekwusigo and Nnewi North trail behind with approximately 250,000 and 221,000 residents respectively.

This makes Nnewi South not only a critical voting bloc but also a significant stakeholder whose representation should reflect its size and contribution to the constituency.

Political balance is another key factor. For stability and unity within the constituency, power distribution must be seen as equitable. With Nnewi North having dominated the House of Representatives in recent years and Ekwusigo currently holding the seat, the logical and fair progression is for Nnewi South to produce the next representative.

This would ensure that no single area monopolizes political power at the expense of others.

Many stakeholders warn that permitting Ekwusigo to produce the next House of Representatives member would create an unhealthy concentration of power, potentially breeding discontent and weakening the spirit of cooperation across the constituency.

In the end, the argument is not rooted in sentiment but in verifiable facts, historical representation, current political positioning, and population strength all point in the same direction.

The opportunity lost when Hon Engr H.C.Nsofor from Ekwusigo LGA was shot during the APGA primary election at Beverly Hills Hotel in 2018 was restored by an Nnewi born Senator who helped the current occupant of the Federal Constituency from Ekwusigo Local Government Area to win.

For the sake of justice, balance, and unity, Nnewi South Local Government Area stands as the most deserving zone to produce the next House of Representatives member in 2027.

Consequently, voices within the constituency maintain that until Nnewi South completes its rightful turn, it would be both unfair and unjustifiable for Ekwusigo LGA to lay claim to the position as canvassed by Oraifite- born daughter of Ekwusigo LGA from Anaocha LGA.
